The locations of the trees can be deduced by following the rules of the logic puzzle.

Some tips on how to get started on the logic puzzle:

  • For each number N greater than 1, you can cross out anything that is distance N-1 in the same column or row.
  • The 8 gives you a lot of information. In that row, you can rule out every single cell except the last one (10-distance away). This also allows you to deduce that the tree in that column is in the 2nd row.
  • In the top row, you now can cross out every cell except for the ones adjacent to the 1.
  • ...

The cryptic clues all solve to words that either start or end with a T.

Observant puzzlers may also notice that there is exactly 1 answer starting with T and 1 answer ending with T for any given answer length between 2 and 12. This indicates that the grid needs to be filled as follows, with Ts matching the tree locations.

Crucially, all “E”s in this grid are either adjacent or diagonally-adjacent to “T”s. The flavortext “flagged the earth around each tree” also hints at the extraction, which consists of identifying the relative locations of “E”s relative to each “T”, and using semaphore decoding to spell out the answer (reading the “T”s left-to-right): EVERYDAY MAMA.

Author’s Notes

At the time this puzzle was written, our hunt sorely lacked cryptics and grid logic puzzles, so I was tasked with writing a puzzle involving both of them. While I love logic puzzles, I am very bad at cryptics -- just doing them, never mind writing them! Huge thanks to Alison, Benji, and Dan for helping me with this portion.

The initial shell consisted of just the grid puzzle, the 22 answers (with the assumption that they will eventually be cryptics), the same grid-fill mechanic, and a diagonal extraction. Upon presenting this to some co-writers, a comment was made that the diagonal extraction only makes use of half the answers and is a rather predictable extraction mechanic. We eventually settled on the semaphore extraction which at least requires most of the grid-fill before being solved. Difficulty-wise we landed in a pretty good spot -- statistically one of the easier puzzles in R2, but definitely not too easy.

One piece of test-solver feedback we got was that the semaphore extraction is kind of hard to notice without fairly explicit flavortext pointing you to do so (where we eventually landed). As a puzzler who highly values thematic tightness/conciseness, this is one thing I do regret. I considered making the location of the initial numbers spell out SEMAPHORETE or something equivalent, but this ended up being too difficult and would have required re-writing almost all of the cryptic clues.
